2021/22 UEFA Women’s Coach of the Year award shortlist revealed

Sonia Bompastor, Martina Voss-Tecklenburg and Sarina Wiegman have been named as the final three nominees for the 2021/22 UEFA Women’s Coach of the Year award.

An initial shortlist of five was compiled by UEFA’s technical study group, before this was narrowed down to the final three by a panel consisting of coaches and journalists.

Bompastor, Voss-Tecklenburg and Wiegman received the most votes, with Barcelona’s Jonatan Giráldez and Wolfsburg’s Tommy Stroot completing the top five.

Bompastor took the reins at Lyon in the summer of 2021, with the club coming off the back of a season where they had not won the Champions League for the first time since 2015, and not won Division One Feminine for the first time since 2006.

By the end of her debut campaign in charge, Lyon had regained their French title, and wrestled back the Champions League with an expertly executed victory over Barcelona in the final.

Voss-Tecklenburg steered Germany through her side’s transitional period as they re-established themselves as one of Europe’s elite with their performances at Euro 2022.

Voss-Tecklenburg’s well-drilled side progressed to the final of Euro 2022 with a 100% record, surging through the ‘group of death’ and not conceding a goal until the semi finals, before being narrowly beaten in extra time by England in the final.

Wiegman won her second successive European Championship title this summer, guiding the Lionesses to their maiden piece of silverware despite taking charge just 10 months before the tournament kicked off.

England won all six matches at Euro 2022, recording a thumping 8-0 victory over Norway in the group stages and sealing a famous extra time win over Germany to be crowned champions of Europe, with Wiegman naming an unchanged starting XI throughout the tournament.

The UEFA Women’s Coach of the Year winner will be revealed on Thursday 25 August as part of the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League group stage draw ceremony at the Haliç Congress Center in Istanbul.
