Alistair Johnston completes trade from Nashville SC to CF Montreal

Canada international Alistair Johnston has completed his trade from Nashville SC to CF Montreal.

The 23-year-old right-back enjoyed a strong 2021 campaign, playing 28 times for Nashville across all competitions while earning 18 caps for the CanMNT – Johnston was also previously eligible for the Northern Ireland national team.

After a couple of weeks of speculation, Johnston has completed a move back to his homeland, with Montreal paying $1m of General Allocation Money (GAM) for his services. Nashville also retain a 10% sell-on clause starting at $1m if Johnston is transferred again in the future.

“We are pleased to welcome this young Canadian who had a strong desire to join the Club,” CF Montréal sporting director Olivier Renard said in a club press release on Monday.

“Beyond his footballing qualities, Alistair has demonstrated an exemplary mindset with the Canadian national team. He is a versatile defender who can play both as a right-back as well as part of a three-man defence. We will continue closely working with him to further his progression. We are delighted to welcome him to the team.”

Nashville general manager Mike Jacobs said: “We would like to thank Alistair for his contributions to our organization, and we wish him success in the next step of his journey with Montréal.”

Though $1m is a considerable amount of GAM, Nashville will have their work cut out replacing Johnston’s production across their backline.

Able to operate as a right-back, wing-back, or as a defensive winger, the Vancouver-born defender offered great versatility. No Nashville player made more tackles than Johnston (49) during the 2021 MLS season, while at the other end of the pitch, he was second for successful crosses into the box (13).

Johnston joins Zachary Brault-Guillard in Montreal’s right-back ranks.
