Antoine Griezmann insists Barcelona move was ‘not a disaster’

Antoine Griezmann has defended his time at Barcelona, insisting his spell at Camp Nou was nowhere near as bad as many have claimed.

A €120m signing from Atletico Madrid in 2019, Griezmann struggled to live up to expectations at the Camp Nou, bagging 35 goals in 102 games before re-joining his former employers in the summer.

Despite some tricky spells, Griezmann insisted to Telefoot that he has no regrets about making the move and remains proud of what he achieved in Catalonia.

“I was very happy to go there, I had incredible team-mates,” he said. “I learned a lot from the coaches, although sometimes I didn’t play and it was complicated.

“It wasn’t a disaster either, because I always scored almost 20 goals every season. For me it is a great pride to have played in Barcelona.”

Griezmann did not leave Atletico on the best terms, dragging out his decision and departing for €100m less than the club had hoped for, but he admitted he has been welcomed back with open arms.

“I think they love me there for who I am, so it’s perfect for everyone,” he continued. “It’s true, I have a coach who trusts me, a club that trusts me. My wife is happy, my children are happy. I am very happy.

“I was worried. I know I got off to a bad start, but I knew I was going to do my best on the pitch to get the spirits up and so far everything is going very well.”

Atleti boss Diego Simeone recently insisted that Rojiblancos fans should not compare Griezmann with the prolific striker from his first spell at the club, admitting that a lot has changed since then.

“Comparisons are never good,” he said (via L’Equipe). “He is no longer the same player. He was younger, but now he has grown and has more experience.

“He has learned a lot, with Barcelona when he was asked to play, and with the French national team. Little by little, he is getting back to his best level. We need him to, he’s someone we went looking for, he’s someone the supporters want to see.”
