Antonio Conte ‘not scared’ by Spurs’ top four challenge

From Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – Antonio Conte insists he is not intimidated by the task of trying to return Spurs to the Champions League this season.

Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Leeds on Sunday moved them to within four points of the top four.

Conte admitted that his side needed major second-half improvements in order to deserve the win, and revealed that one of his immediate priorities is climbing the Premier League table.

“We want to fight and we want to try to improve the position in the table,” Conte said in his post-match press conference. “I think, and I must be honest, in England the league is very difficult. Every game is tough and you can lose points against all teams.”

Conte then revealed he already sees four teams that are far better than the rest in the Premier League and that Spurs must do their best to close that gap.

“I think in this moment there are four teams that, for many reasons – they are working with the same coaches, invested a lot of money – that there is a gap.

“But I’m not scared. I trust in my players, in this squad. We want to fight to stay close, [to be] in the position to fight for the Champions League and then if there is one team that sleeps this season or makes mistakes, we must be there to try to do our best.

“I don’t want to say ‘if we finish in this position it’s good’. We need to improve. The club called me to try and improve the situation in the present and future. Now I’m happy because I like to work with Tottenham. I know that here I can work in the way I like. I’m sure we can improve a lot to fight and be competitive in every competition, Tottenham have to fight in every competition.”
