Antonio Conte reveals Tottenham are ‘checking’ more Covid-19 cases in squad

Antonio Conte has revealed Tottenham are checking on a few potential Covid-19 cases ahead of their Carabao Cup semi final first leg with Chelsea on Wednesday.

Spurs had one of the first big outbreaks of coronavirus back in December, causing games against Rennes and Brighton to be postponed.

In his press conference on Monday, Conte said: “We’re checking a couple of situations. We’ll see. We are checking a couple of situations about Covid.

“We are not 100 per cent sure they will miss the game.”

While the identities of those players won’t become clear until the match, Spurs will definitely be without Cristian Romero and Ryan Sessegnon, while Conte added that they’ll have to “wait a bit” to see if Steven Bergwijn will be available.

Wednesday’s clash represents a first visit to Stamford Bridge for Conte since he was dismissed by Chelsea back in 2018. The Italian won a Premier League title and the FA Cup during his two seasons with the Blues and admitted he is looking forward to the return.

He added: “For me for sure it will be great to come back to Stamford Bridge as the first time after I left Chelsea. What I can say is that I spent two amazing seasons, created lot of friendships in the club.”

Tottenham reached the final of the Carabao Cup last season, being defeated by Manchester City 1-0. However, the holders are not in the final four this term, giving Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal a shot at a competition the Citizens usually win with ease.

Spurs have been in good form during Conte’s first few months in charge, closing the gap on the top four to two points with two games in hand.
