Cinema Long wait until operation
No, it’s not the plot to a new film. Ashley Judd suffered a fall while travelling in the Congo jungle and had to endure a long journey before being operated on in South Africa.
Judd was tracking bonobo apes as part of her conservation work on a regular trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo when she suffered the accident.
The actress from California fell over a fallen tree in the dark due to a broken lamp and broke her leg but help was a long journey away.
She had to lay on the forest floor for five hours before being stretchered out of the forest, taken on a six-hour motorcycle ride and two flights before reaching a South African hospital.
Judd has spoken of her privilege and wanted to highlight that a local person would not have had such good fortune, mentioning that she could have lost the leg.
“[I am recovering in] in an ICU trauma unit in beautiful South Africa, which has taken me in from the Congo: a country I deeply love which is not, unfortunately, equipped to deal with massive, catastrophic injuries like I have had,” said Judd.
“And the difference between a Congolese person and me is disaster insurance that allowed me 55 hours after my accident to get to an operating table in South Africa.”
