As had been predicted, storm Filomena is causing problems for this weekend’s LaLiga Santander fixtures and Atletico Madrid‘s game at home to Athletic Club is already under threat.

Athletic‘s flight to the capital was unable to land as planned at 21:09 local time at Madrid Barajas International Airport and was instead turned back to Bilbao.

There is no certainty that the airport will be fully operational on Saturday, and even transport from the airport to the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano, which is a mere stone’s throw away, is complicated, as the storm has caused traffic chaos and the capital is practically shut down.

Athletic now have to plan their next move upon arrival in Bilbao. Two coaches await the players at the airport and they have to decide whether they’ll go to a hotel as a team or if the players will go to their respective homes.

The club are in contact with LaLiga to determine what will happen about the match.
