Atlanta United’s Andrew Gutman out for 8-12 weeks

Atlanta United’s injury woes continue after defender Andrew Gutman became the latest player to join the sidelines.

Gutman sustained a quad injury during Atlanta’s 2-2 draw against Nashville SC at GEODIS Park on Saturday and is set to miss an estimated eight to 12 weeks, announced the team on Monday.

The 25-year-old first joined the Five Stripes in 2021 on a permanent transfer from Celtic FC. He was loaned out to the New York Red Bulls that year before returning in 2022 to kick off strong. He has since become a crucial part of the team’s success, standing as one of Atlanta’s most reliable players and starting all 12 games this season at left back.

Without Gutman, the Eastern Conference side will most likely turn to homegrown figure Caleb Wiley, Mikey Ambrose and Ronald Hernandez. The team must also replace Miles Robinson, who’s out for the season after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Brad Guzan and Ozzie Alosno suffered season-ending injuries as well, while star striker Josef Martinez and midfielder Santiago Sosa remain on the sidelines with the expectation of returning in the coming weeks.

Despite the heavy injuries, head coach Gonzalo Pineda has managed to maintain the team afloat in eighth place on the Eastern Conference table with 16 points in 12 matches.
