Atletico Madrid Impressive numbers
Atletico Madrid are proving to be a rather effective team in both attack and defence this season. Diego Simeone‘s side are four points clear at the top of LaLiga Santander having played two games fewer than both Real Madrid and Barcelona.
On Tuesday, they moved 11 points clear of Sevilla by beating Julen Lopetegui’s side 2-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano.
“They manage both boxes very well,” the Sevilla boss admitted afterwards, praising Atletico‘s clinical finishing and compact defending.
Against Sevilla, Jan Oblak kept his 11th clean sheet in LaLiga Santander in his 16th game of the season so far. In fact, the Slovenian concedes just 0.38 goals per game.
Up the other end, Atletico have scored 31 goals in 16 matches, which is only bettered by Barcelona‘s 37 in LaLiga Santander – the Catalans have played two games more too.
Luis Suarez has improved this ruthlessness in front of goal. Los Rojiblancos score 45.59 percent of shots they take at goal this campaign.
Only Elche‘s 40 percent success rate comes close to that figure, while Real Madrid are on 37 percent and Barcelona just 29 percent.
These numbers make for even more impressive reading when you consider that Atletico have just 2.19 shots on target per game, with 10 teams in LaLiga Santander averaging more than three per game.
Looking at these statistics, you can understand Lopetegui‘s comment. Simeone has perfected his penalty area play to earn 41 points from the first 48 available this season.
