Felipe Monteiro was the Atletico Madrid signing who made the greatest impact last season, which came as a surprise at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.

He was brought in to replace a legend in Diego Godin, but he faced stiff competition from Stefan Savic and Jose Gimenez at the heart of the Los Rojiblancos backline.

After a tough start, Felipe became a fixed part of Diego Simeone’s XI with Atletico and was the signing who played more than any other.

Gimenez was forced out of the team this season, allowing Felipe to get into the side alongside Savic, though he struggled to show his best self.

Gimenez’s return has seen Felipe drop back to the bench, with Savic’s performance making him too valuable to drop.

His losing of prominence in the team has also been seen with Brazil, with him left out against Venezuela this week.

The defender hasn’t had much international experience in his career, but his secondary role in Madrid appears to be hurting him with the Selecao as well.
