LaLiga Could be played in a Copa del Rey slot
Atletico Madrid vs Athletic Club was due to be played at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano this Saturday afternoon at 16:15 CET, but it has been postponed due to the weather caused by Storm Filomena.
Athletic Club tried to land at Barajas Airport in Madrid on Friday night, but were unable to do so and had to turn back to the Basque Country.
With the airport in the capital being closed this Saturday due to the heavy snowfall, Athletic Club cannot travel in time for the match.
The refereeing crew for the game were unable to arrive either.
“Given the exceptional situation caused by the storm across a large part of the Iberian peninsula, causing the closure of Madrid Barajas airport throughout the day, and the impossibility of having the pitch in optimal playing conditions, LaLiga, after contacting both clubs, have asked the Professional Competition Committee first thing this morning to postpone the match between Atletico Madrid and Athletic Club initially scheduled for Saturday at the Wanda Metropolitano,” a statement from LaLiga said.
“A new match date will be confirmed in the coming days during one of the available slots in the competition calendar.”
Playing on Sunday isn’t being considered because the stormy weather is expected to continue and because Atleti have another game already planned for Tuesday.
It’s expected that the match could be played if and when Valencia are knocked out of the Copa del Rey, since Atletico Madrid will be free in those midweek cup slots for the foreseeable future.
