Barcelona’s plans for the 2020/21 season are well underway, however they are facing some difficulty due to the impact of the coronavirus crisis, which has caused Ronald Koeman to take out his notebook as he looks to prioritise players he has worked with before whilst in charge of the Dutch national team.

The new coach wants to decide on the formation and the composition of the project, not just his approval for players to arrive.

Barcelona’s main target in this transfer window is Inter forward Lautaro Martinez, but the Nerazzurri are continuing to point to their 90 million euro valuation of the 23-year-old.

At the Camp Nou, they have not given up hope of signing Lautaro, yet Koeman has presented the club with a cheaper alternative option: Lyon star Memphis Depay.

The Dutch forward has one year left on his contract and Lyon value him at 25 million euros.

Depay can play up top or as a left winger, and he was a regular starter for Koeman when he was in charge of the Netherlands.

It is not just in attack where the coach has offered a suggestion, however, as Barcelona are also looking to strengthen at centre-back.

The Catalan club have opened talks with Manchester City as they look to bring Eric Garcia back to Catalonia, yet the English side are demanding 23 million euros for a player whose contract comes to an end next summer.

As such, Barcelona may be prepared to wait one year and then sign Garcia on a free.

Nevertheless, Koeman recognises the immediate need to strengthen in defence and has put forward the name of Inter centre-back Stefan de Vrij, another player who worked under his orders with the Dutch national team.

Barcelona are prioritising moves for a forward and a centre-back, but Koeman has also said that, if there is money available, he would like to shore up the midfield with Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum.

The 29-year-old, like Depay, has one year left on his contract, with Liverpool valuing him at 15 million euros.

In any case, Barcelona and Koeman are working against the clock when it comes to making signings, as their LaLiga Santander campaign gets underway in two weeks’ time against Villarreal on September 26 or 27.
