Barcelona making progress with Ousmane Dembele contract talks

Barcelona are feeling good about their latest round of contract talks with winger Ousmane Dembele and are optimistic that an agreement will be reached soon.

The 24-year-old has entered the final year of his current deal and has fluctuated between wanting to leave and asking to stay. He’s thought to be keen on extending now, and Barcelona are eager to make that happen.

Barcelona have always wanted to keep Dembele, but have also threatened him with a year in the reserves if he does not extend. Charming.

A meeting was held with Dembele’s representatives last week, and according to Mundo Deportivo, it went pretty well. The two parties discussed everything from salary to potential minutes, and no major obstacles were hit.

Dembele had been concerned about losing playing time in a stacked Barcelona attack that is now even more overcrowded following the arrivals of Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay, but he has been promised the chance to be a regular starter on the right wing.

With Francisco Trincao leaving the club, Dembele is actually the only natural right winger in the squad currently, and that could still be the case even if Lionel Messi re-signs as Ronald Koeman deployed the Argentine as a central striker last season.

Barcelona have made it clear that they see Dembele as a core part of both their present and their future, and it seems as though the Frenchman is now buying into what the club are saying.

Talks with Dembele’s agent will continue over the coming days, but as of right now, Barcelona are confident they will be able to find an agreement eventually.

Negotiations always looked like being tricky, but they became extra complicated when Dembele picked up a hamstring injury at Euro 2020 that will force him to miss the start of the coming La Liga season.

He is facing four months on the sidelines and is unlikely to be seen in a Barcelona shirt again until November.
