FC Barcelona – La Liga Koeman wants midfielders to score 10 goals
Ronald Koeman demands attacking involvement from his midfielders. The Dutch coach wants them to contribute around 10 goals a season and they’ve stepped up in recent matches.
Against Granada, both Frenkie de Jong and Pedri were impressive in the final third and a lot of their passes game in the opponents’ half. De Jong made 28 passes there to Pedri’s 25, and 90 percent of them were accurate.
Both came close to scoring early on and, although they both need to contribute more goals, Koeman was happy.
The Dutch midfielder’s use of the ball, and the ease at which he played the ball forward, was a delight. He’s done a lot defensively, even playing at centre-back this season, but his coach wants more from him going forward.
De Jong has work to do, though, as he’s never been a player who has been characterised by his work around the opponents’ box. His best scoring season came at Ajax in 2018/19, when he scored three goals. He only has eight in his entire club career.
He was signed by Barcelona because of his use of the ball, not because of his eye for goal.
Pedri, for his part, has established himself as one of the Catalans’ most promising players this season. The Canary Islander scored four goals with Las Palmas in 2019/20, and now he has three for Barcelona.
Koeman knows that his youth will prevent him from always playing to a high level, but he’s giving him the minutes he needs to grow.
Miralem Pjanic has more attacking characteristics than many of his teammates in midfield, and he has always contributed with goals at Lyon, Roma and Juventus, but he’s yet to score for Barcelona.
At the moment, he isn’t a regular in Koeman‘s XI, but the club insist that he was a necessary signing.
