FC Barcelona – La Liga Didn’t sign Eric Garcia
Ronald Koeman partnered up Oscar Mingueza and Samuel Umtiti at centre-back for Barcelona in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final tie against Sevilla on Wednesday.
These are the two players that were recently singled out by a leaked report, put together by Barcelona‘s directors, for being unable to feature in high-demanding games.
Wednesday’s match at the Estadio Ramon-Sanchez Pizjuan was one of the important games that Barcelona have to play in February. However, the current presidential candidates decided against signing Eric Garcia from Manchester City in exchange for just three million euros and the club’s defence was an experimental one against Sevilla.
With Gerard Pique, Sergino Dest, Sergi Roberto and Ronald Araujo sidelined due to injuries, Koeman used Junior Firpo at right-back and Mingueza alongside Umtiti at centre-back.
The Frenchman was dribbled past by Jules Kounde in the first goal and lost Ivan Rakitic for Sevilla’s second.
Umtiti demonstrated his quality as a defender in his first few seasons at Barcelona, but injuries have weighed on him in recent years.
The Blaugrana had the opportunity to strengthen their defence with a homegrown youngster, in Garcia, as presidential candidate Victor Font had reached an agreement with the City to sign him in January.
Manchester City would charge just 250,000 euros this season and although Barcelona‘s financial situation is worrying, Garcia‘s case is different.
Garcia ticked all boxes for Barcelona in sporting terms, with Koeman putting pressure on the presidential candidates to approve the move. However, the candidates couldn’t reach any agreement and as a result Barcelona have had to play an experimental defence with Sevilla.
For refusing to spend just three million euros, Barcelona could go a second season in a row without winning a single title.
