Barcelona’s hammering of Alaves on Saturday came with Lionel Messi starring. The Argentine grabbed the headlines with an impressive performance and two fine goals, but there were other important contributors who played their part as well.

Ronald Koeman‘s youngsters stepped up at the Camp Nou. Trincao, Riqui Puig, Ilaix Moriba and Pedri were all key on the night.

The first two of those four are just 21, while the latter pair are 18.

Trincao is improving a lot of late. He had a tough time settling in Catalonia and Saturday’s game was his first start in LaLiga Santander. That said, though, he now has three goals in his last two appearances after scoring an important goal at Real Betis as well.

The Portuguese’s improvement has come as good news for Ronald Koeman as it increases the competition for places at the club. Now, he’s battling with Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann for a place in the XI.

Riqui Puig played for 90 minutes for the first time this season, which was important for him after being on the market last summer. He decided to stay at the club, and he’s getting more minutes as the seasons goes on.

Ilaix debuted in LaLiga Santander having already played at Cornella in the Copa del Rey, but he did well on Saturday and even assisted Trincao‘s opener. It’s true that he made a costly mistake for Alaves‘ only goal, but that was just the one negative note on an impressive evening’s work.

Finally, there’s Pedri. The teenager – who was signed from Las Palmas in the summer – came on in the second half and he has been one of the revelations of the season for the Catalans. He had a hand in the third goal, playing the ball to Messi who, in turn, found Trincao for the finish.
