Bayern Munich will wear a stunning shirt co-designed by Pharrell Williams in their DFB-Pokal tie against Holstein Kiel, to commemorate the end of their Human Race campaign.
The initiative champions diversity in sport and society with €100,000 worth of sales from the special jersey being donated to the SOS Children’s Villages charity. The campaign was run jointly by adidas and Pharrell’s lifestyle company Humanrace, however, Bayern were not the only team to receive a striking new jersey.
Bayern’s effort is a modern take on the strip they wore between 1991 and 1993, which caught the eye of contemporaries with its bold, three-stripe print across the shoulders and shorts. Williams and the Humanrace designers recreated this look by hand using thick acrylic paint, and the result is mesmerising.
Reflecting on the Human Race campaign drawing to a close, Bayern president Herbert Hainer said: “Social values such as diversity and tolerance are essential building blocks of FC Bayern’s DNA. With around 300,000 members, we are the largest sports club in the world, and as ‘The Worlds Biggest Sports Family’ we want to live up to this responsibility.
“Sport connects people around the globe. FC Bayern wants to play a part in this.”
CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge added: “We are very pleased with our ‘Human Race’ campaign. FC Bayern was once again able to set an example for diversity and tolerance.
“We are also very pleased that €100,000 were raised for the organisation SOS Children’s Villages worldwide. We would also like to thank our fans here who, by buying this very special jersey, have shown that they share the values that FC Bayern lives by. We all wear the same jersey.”
