Bobby Shuttleworth completes Atlanta United transfer

Atlanta United have bolstered their goalkeeping options with the signing of Bobby Shuttleworth via free agency.

The Five Stripes have been on the lookout for an experienced stopper to backup Brad Guzan after Alec Kann departed for FC Cincinnati earlier in the winter.

Shuttleworth arrives at Mercedes-Benz Stadium with more than a decade of MLS experience under his belt and 227 regular-season matches played so far. The 34-year-old had spent the last couple of years with the Chicago Fire but lost his No.1 spot to teenage sensation Gabriel Slonina at the end of last season and didn’t renew his contract.

The veteran goalkeeper has signed a contract with Atlanta United through the 2022 season, with a club option for 2023.

“Bobby is a veteran goalkeeper with many years of experience in MLS and we’re pleased to add him to our roster,” Atlanta United vice president and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a press release. “He brings experience and competition to our goalkeeping group.”

Shuttleworth is the latest arrival in a busy offseason for Atlanta United, who have also signed fellow goalkeeper Dylan Castanheira and midfielder Osvaldo Alonso via free agency. They also picked up Erik Centeno, Tristan Trager, Daniel Bloyou, and Tola Showunmi in the recent MLS SuperDraft. Right-back Ronald Hernandez is expected to complete a permanent move shortly.

Alongside Kann, the likes of Franco Escobar, Anton Walkes, and Mo Adams have left the club. Atlanta United will also need to move on a Designated Player to allow for the singing of Argentine sensation Thiago Almada – Ezequiel Barco is currently linked with a move to Brazilian side Internacional.

Gonzalo Pineda’s men open their 2022 campaign at home to Sporting Kansas City on February 27 before travelling to the Colorado Rapids.
