Borussia Dortmund chief executive says Erling Haaland needs to replicate Robert Lewandowski

Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has told Manchester United and Chelsea target Erling Haaland to use Robert Lewandowski’s career as the blueprint for how to get to the very top.

The Norway international has been in scintillating form since his move to Der BVB in January 2020, averaging a goal a game in his first 35 appearances for the club.

The 20-year-old’s undoubted talent hasn’t gone unnoticed among Europe’s elite, with a whole host of clubs rumoured to be chasing the Dortmund man’s signature.

Among those said to be keen to thrash out a deal for Haaland are Premier League duo Manchester United and Chelsea. However, in a bid to retain the Norwegian’s services, Watzke has told the youngster to consider the progression of former Dortmund man Lewandowski before deciding to move from the club so soon.

Lewandowski spent four years with Dortmund before moving to Bayern Munich, where he’s now considered by many to be the best striker in the world, and – while he doesn’t expect Haaland to move any time soon – Watzke has told the youngster he should consider Lewandowski’s development in his four seasons with Dortmund before deciding on his future.

“I don’t think that [an exit] will happen,” he told Kicker. “Erling and his advisor Mino Raiola know what they have in us.

“I can only advise him to do things like Robert Lewandowski. Lewandowski gave himself time to mature into an absolutely world-class player in Dortmund.

“You won’t be able to do that in a year. Because it is clear that if Erling should leave us at some point, then he will only go to an even bigger club, and so many are not considered. If you join a club – just for an example – Real Madrid, then you have to be world-class.”
