Borussia Dortmund stand firm over Erling Haaland and won’t sell in 2021

Borussia Dortmund have successfully stood firm on Erling Haaland’s future – and will not entertain any offers for the Norwegian striker until summer 2022.

Chelsea had been among the chief suitors for the 21-year-old this year, though Dortmund have stood firm to their plan of not selling in the same summer as allowing Jadon Sancho to depart. The forward has joined Manchester United for £73m this year.

Sources close to the club have told 90min that the matter of Haaland leaving was now at an end.

The German giants are prepared for Haaland to leave for a set fee in 2022, no matter what they were offered this summer, even while they can only expect to fetch around half of what was on offer this summer. Haaland has a clause in his contract that means he can leave next year if an offer of around €75m is received.

European champions Chelsea believed that an offer in excess of £130m may have been enough to tempt Dortmund into selling now, but they have told all suitors they will not consider a sale. They have now turned their attention back to former striker Romelu Lukaku, of Inter.

Paris Saint Germain and Real Madrid were also interested in Haaland for this year, but may revisit the situation when the price drops in a year’s time.

A source close to Dortmund has confirmed to 90min: “The deal is not happening, there have been chances to sell and sell big, but Dortmund always wanted and planned for him to stay.

“Yes they miss out on a few million – but it will still be a healthy profit and they keep a player who can help them compete for the Bundesliga.”

Dortmund pocketed the funds they needed to bring in this summer when finally sanctioning the sale of Sancho to United. Indeed, the Sancho deal showed that Dortmund are willing to sacrifice funds as they could have made more money on the England international last summer, but they held on to keep him for another 12 months.

They wasted little time in spending their profits from Sancho, brining in Dutch starlet Donyell Malen from PSV Eindhoven for less than £30m.

Dortmund open their Bundesliga campaign on August 14 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.
