Supercopa de Espana | Barcelona vs Athletic Club Hopeful Messi will play
Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets is adamant that winning the Supercopa De Espana would be an important step in the right direction for the club.
Athletic Club will be the Blaugrana’s opponents on Sunday after they dumped Real Madrid out in the semi-final, with Barcelona on the way up after a poor start to the season.
“This is the right way, as we are coming in from a good period,” Busquets told the press. “The collective feeling is better.
“Winning would be an important step for us and I’m sure this team can improve. We are motivated and happy to be in with a chance of winning the first title. It wasn’t easy, the team is getting better and better and doing things well and hopefully that can be reflected on the pitch.”
There are doubts about whether or not Lionel Messi will be able to play in the final, and Busquets underlined his importance to this Barcelona team and is optimistic he will make the starting XI.
“Messi is the best in the world, and we have more options if he is there,” Busquets stated. “He is going to try and be ready.
“We will see how his body reacts and how he is tomorrow [Sunday]. The final decision will be made between him, the medical team and the coach.”
The emergence of Pedri has been a major source of optimism at Barcelona this season, with the 18-year-old putting in a series of excellent performances in recent games.
“What Pedri has to do is continue as he has been doing until now,” Busquets said. “But he shouldn’t be burdened with any responsibility.
“He is working very well and has a brutal job with very big scope for improvement. I hope we can enjoy [watching him] a lot because as a person and teammate, he has everything to make it so.”
When asked about Iker Muniain and his excellent form coming into the Supercopa final, Busquets was complimentary about the Athletic Club captain.
“He [Muniain] is a great player, and his career shows that,” Busquets said. “All the years he has been at Athletic.
“He is a difficult player to stop and he is now playing on the wing, where he comes inside and is dangerous. Whether or not he is of the level of a Barcelona [player] is irrelevant, it is very difficult [to say].
“Changing teams is hard and I think he is very comfortable at Athletic, and he is definitely going to be there for many [more] years.”
