Carlo Ancelotti praises Diego Simeone for longevity at Atletico Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti has said he hopes to replicate Diego Simeone’s longevity and success with Atletico Madrid at Real Madrid as the two sides prepare for the capital’s derby on Sunday night.

Simeone is renowned as one of Europe’s best coaches and has made Atleti feared opponents in both La Liga and the Champions League, having won Spain’s top flight twice during his ten-year stint with the club.

Ancelotti is in his second spell with Real and has started well, earning a five point lead at the top of La Liga, with usual heavy-hitters Atleti and Barcelona well off the pace so far. Instead, Sevilla are second and four points off the top, with Real Betis third and Atletico fourth.

Speaking in his press conference before the game, Ancelotti said: “There are three points at stake, it is emotional to play a derby against a direct rival, a great rival.

“It is clear that there is going to be more pressure on both teams, all the fans feel this match in a particular way, but for the table it is three points and that is what we have to do, play to win the three points and make our fans happy.”

“He [Simeone] has put the club among the best in Europe,” he added.

“He has won titles and continues to do so impeccably. What has happened to Simeone is everything that coaches want, to stay a long time at a club and leave their mark.

“I hope what happened with Simeone can happen to me, to stay at the club for many years.”

Ancelotti only spent two years with Real the first time around, enjoying a glorious 2014 when Los Blancos won the Copa del Rey, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup before he was dismissed a year later. Should Real win La Liga this season, it would be his first league triumph since 2017, when he won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.
