Carlos Coronel signs with New York Red Bulls through 2024

Carlos Coronel isn’t going anywhere.

The 24-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper completed his transfer from Red Bull Salzburg to New York Red Bulls Monday, signing a deal with the team to keep him in New York through 2024.

Coronel was one of the top goalkeepers in MLS during his first season with the Red Bulls in 2021. He recorded 13 shutouts on the campaign, tied for the league lead, and was one of only two goalkeepers in the league to play every minute in 2021.

Keeping Coronel around for another three years was a no-brainer for RBNY.

“Carlos is a big talent and I am pleased to see him back with us,” head coach Gerhard Struber said in a statement. “Not only is he a good person to have in our locker room, but someone who is key to build upon our success from last season to the next.”

Coronel previously spent time with Salzburg and Philadelphia Union before his transfer to RBNY in February. He made three appearances, including two starts, during the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League Group Stage for RB Salzburg, earning a 1-1-1 record.

After a strong first season, Coronel is a part of RBNY’s long-term plans, as the team looks to compete for its first MLS Cup title.

“Carlos was a big part of our success last season and we are delighted to extend his stay with us,” Head of Sport Kevin Thelwell said. “Finishing as one of the top goalkeepers last season made it an easy decision for us to bring him back.”
