Championship play-offs 2022: Fixtures, dates & teams in the race to the Premier League

We’re firmly on the home stretch of the 2021/22 season, which means everyone’s favourite period of the campaign will soon be among us – the Championship play-offs.

Achieving promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs is often called the sweetest of victories, but losing makes it the most bitter of defeats.

The final is hailed as ‘the richest game in football’, with the winners in line to earn at least £135m after one season in England’s top flight alone.

Brentford beat Swansea in the 2021 final and are doing just fine in their maiden Premier League campaign. Here’s everything you need to know about the 2022 Championship play-offs…

While the date for the final has been set for Sunday 29 May at Wembley, those for the semi-finals will be announced closer to the time.

The Championship’s regular season ends on Saturday 7 May, so it is likely that the play-offs will be scheduled for the following weekends.

The teams ranked from third to sixth in the table will qualify for the Championship play-offs.

First-placed Fulham are a whopping 16 points clear of Nottingham Forest in third (though have played a game more) and so it’s extremely likely that they won’t need the play-offs to secure promotion back to the Premier League.

Bournemouth are six points ahead of Forest and remain favourites to join Fulham in the top two, though that is hardly set in stone and they still have Steve Cooper’s resilient side to play later this season.

While Forest will have one eye on pipping the Cherries to second place, they are in the midst of quite a battle to even secure a top-six place.

Just six points separate Forest in third from Millwall in ninth. Huddersfield, Luton and Sheffield United currently occupy the remaining play-off spots, though Blackburn are hot on their heels and Middlesbrough can climb into the top six if they win their game in hand.

Coventry and QPR are six points adrift of sixth and can’t yet be ruled out of the running, though face a mighty task of trying to break into the play-off picture again.

Championship table – as of 11/4/22
