Chicharito opens up on ‘medium term’ retirement plans

At 33 years old, Chicharito Hernandez has no plans on hanging up his boots any time soon.

The LA Galaxy frontman remains a permanent starter for his side and is once again expected to be in the battle for the league’s top goalscorer award at the end of the season.

However, in a recent press conference, Chicharito admitted he is approaching the twilight of his career but insisted that he will only start to contemplate retirement when his body and mind can no longer keep up.

“I do see myself [retired] in the medium term, I think that’s the most congruent answer I can say. A long term would be 10, 15, 20 years, but I think my body wouldn’t give that far, but who knows. I’m 33, I don’t know,” he said.

“If my body gives and responds the way it should respond, but if my body is no longer responding or my mind, that would be a good moment for a teammate to take my place. I don’t know, but I do see myself in a medium term. But who knows, I could retire next season or we could continue doing interviews in 10 years.”

The forward kicked off his career in 2005 with Liga MX’s Chivas de Guadalajara, spending five years in Mexico before making his debut abroad with Manchester United. He went on to see successful stints around Europe, with Real Madrid, West Ham, Sevilla and Bayer Leverkusen prior to taking on Major League Soccer with LA Galaxy in 2020.

Since then, he’s become a crucial part of the Galaxy’s success, recording 24 goals and three assists in 43 league appearances.

The Mexican has also seen a prolific international career, standing as El Tri’s top scorer with 51 goals. He represented the Mexican national team in three World Cups, two Confederations Cups and several Concacaf tournaments.
