Christophe Galtier attempts to explain Neymar’s red card in Strasbourg win

Christophe Galtier has insisted Neymar had no plans to try and get himself suspended when he picked up a late red card in PSG’s 2-1 win over Strasbourg on Wednesday.

Neymar picked up two yellow cards in the space of a minute shortly after the hour mark, the first for a foul and the second for a dive, and will now be suspended for the trip to face Lens on January 1.

As sceptics have pointed out, that game against Lens comes one day after Brazil’s famous Réveillon celebrations. Neymar has long faced accusations that he manufactures suspensions or injuries in order to return to his homeland for parties, and many have claimed this is the latest in a long list of alleged examples.

His sister’s birthday, March 11, is the focal point of this theory, with Neymar missing games around that date for various reasons between 2014 and 2019.

Keen to avoid feeding the drama, Galtier insisted after the game that Neymar’s loss of discipline was simply down to frustration.

“I can understand that there is anger in him, he really wanted to play the next two games,” Galtier insisted.

“As much as I can understand the simulation, he deserves the yellow [card], a few minutes before he suffers a bad foul and his first yellow is very harsh compared to the number of fouls suffered by Ney.”

The boss added: “Strasbourg is a team that plays well, but also gives off a lot of strength and power. There was a lot of impact in this match. I regret that the excess of commitment was not sanctioned more harshly for certain players. It could have generated a little frustration for Ney.”
