Club America in advanced talks to sign D.C. United’s Paul Arriola

Paul Arriola could be making his return to Liga MX soon.

After several weeks of speculation, the player confirmed the interest from Club America himself, revealing in an interview that he cannot talk too in depth about the subject but ‘it is real’.

The player is currently at the US men’s national team January training camp as the group prepares for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Canada, El Salvador and Honduras.

While his focus remains on the USMNT, Arriola would welcome the opportunity to go back to Liga MX.

“There is interest from Club América to sign me and I can’t really talk about it. But it is real,” said Paul Arriola.

The striker kicked off his professional career in Mexico, featuring for Club Tijuana from 2013 to 2017. With the Xolos, Arriola recorded nine goals and three assists in 108 total appearances.

On August 9 2017, he signed for D.C. United as a Designated Player. The 26-year-old is now entering his sixth season with the Major League Soccer team, where he holds a record of 20 goals and 16 assists in 89 MLS regular-season appearances.

The last two years, however, have been drastically limited due to his ACL injury in 2020.

Arriola also had a brief stint with English Championship side Swansea City, but the loan was cut short when the winger suffered a quadriceps injury.

Internationally, Arriola has 42 USMNT caps to his name, scoring eight times. He also formed part of the American squad that beat Mexico to lift the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup trophy last summer.

The move would make sense for the Mexican side as they stand in desperate need of a winger after selling Sebastian Cordova and Leo Suarez. The team is without a dominant forward.

Given his history with the Xolos in 2013, Arriola would not register as a foreign player on the Mexican side’s roster. Having trained with Club Tijuana during his early years, he is considered native to the league.

Like Designated Players for Major League Soccer, there are a limited number of spots available for foreign players on Liga MX rosters.
