FC Barcelona – La Liga A look at some of the most bizarre privileges
Since Lionel Messi’s contract was leaked, the details of the Argentine’s deal have been the topic of much debate. Some of the terms in his contract included integrating himself in Catalan culture and needing to learn the local language.
Messi isn’t the only player who has had surprising terms included in his contract however.
In 2018, Neymar revealed to French television channel France 2 that he earns 370,000 euros in bonuses at Paris Saint Germain simply for applauding fans at the end of matches, which he later denied on social media. His teammate Thiago Silva also had a similar agreement in his contract which saw him receive 33,000 euros.
When Ezequiel Lavezzi moved to Chinese side Hebei Fortune he earned 55 euros per minutes and requested two furnished houses, two cars, a personal chef and a chauffeur.
This doesn’t beat teammate Gervinho, however, who received a private beach, a mansion, a helicopter and plane tickets to return home whenever he wanted.
According to La Nacion, when Ronaldinho signed for Flamengo in 2011 he asked for a term in his contract that would allow him to go out partying twice a week. The ex-Barcelona man also asked for a house with a pool, a beach football pitch, a 7-a-side pitch and four butlers.
Fellow Argentine Maradona had a private jet during his time in the UAE that allowed him to fly home when to see his family when he pleased.
All of this makes the clauses in Messi’s contract seem quite normal.
