Ligue 1 Projected losses of 204m euros
The coronavirus pandemic is affecting everyone, including rich football clubs like Paris Saint-Germain. The Ligue 1 champions have submitted a report which details losses of 204 million euros for the 2020/21 season.
This report has been submitted to the national management control board of French football’s authorities and represents a 60 percent change compared to the previous year.
This is according to L’Equipe, who explain that the club must cut costs. There will, therefore, be a need to sell players.
The timing of this is far from ideal for the French club as they are currently right in the middle of contract renewal talks with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.
Both players have deals that run until the summer of 2022 and it remains to be seen how this latest financial report and the provisional losses of 204m euros will affect these negotiations.
Sporting director Leonardo wants to keep Neymar and Mbappe, but knows it’s not always easy to have multiple superstars.
While efforts to renew both forwards have begun, the club’s position is clear and that’s the fact that Neymar‘s renewal is the first priority.
Despite these financial difficulties, Lionel Messi remains a dream at the Parc des Princes.
The Argentine’s Barcelona contract ends this summer and there has been talk that he could reunite with Neymar in the French capital.
Great players like Messi will always be on PSG‘s shortlist, but now isn’t the time to talk or dream about this,” Leonardo told France Football recently.
“We are sitting at the table following this matter closely. Four months in football is an eternity, especially in this day and age, but our chair is reserved at the table.”
It remains to be seen, then, if Messi will be affordable and if keeping Neymar and Mbappe will be possible too. The crisis has even hit one of the richest clubs in the world.
