Cristian Romero begins medical for €50m Tottenham move

Tottenham are on the verge of completing the €50m (£42.6m) signing of Atalanta defender Christian Romero, with his medical beginning.

General manager Fabio Paratici has been in talks with the Serie A outfit over a move for Romero for some time now, with Spurs desperate to add to their defensive options before the start of the 2021/22 season.

The departure of Toby Alderweireld recently only increased Nuno Espirito Santo need for centre-back reinforcements, and it seems they may finally be about to rubber-stamp the arrival of one of their main targets.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Romero’s medical ahead of a move to Spurs is already underway in Italy, while he’ll arrive in England on Thursday before completing his switch to north London.

A whopping €50m (£42.6m) fee has been agreed between the two teams with €5m (£4.2m) in add-ons meaning Atalanta are set to make a tidy profit on their original investment of just €16m (£13.8m).

Throughout Spurs’ discussions with Atalanta, Romero has actually technically always been a Juventus player having only been on loan at La Dea. However, his temporary switch to Gian Piero Gasperini’s side included the option to make the move permanent for just €16m – something they obviously chose to do before immediately selling him to Spurs for more than treble the price.

Having taken a little time to get going, Paratici’s work behind the scenes at Spurs is finally beginning to reap rewards, with Romero soon to be the third new arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

Highly-rated Spanish winger Bryan Gil has already completed a move to the club, with Erik Lamela heading in the opposite direction as part of the move, while Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini has also joined the club on loan.

The north Londoners have been linked with a move for a whole host of other players, with Adama Traore and Schalke’s Matthew Hoppe the latest names to be mentioned, and the arrival of Romero will almost certainly not be the last at the club this summer.
