Dakar Rally At 52 years old
French rider Pierre Cherpin has died from the injuries he sustained during a crash on Stage 7 of the Dakar Rally in January.
News of the 52-year-old motorcyclist’s death broke on Friday after it was revealed that he had passed away while on his way home.
“During his transfer by medical plane from Jeddah to France, Pierre Cherpin died from the injuries caused by his fall,” organisers of the Dakar Rally said in a statement.
“Urgently operated in neurosurgery, he had since then been kept in an induced coma, his condition having remained stable over the past few days.
“He was airlifted from Sakaka to Jeddah’s hospital from where he was going to be transferred to Lille’s hospital.”
“Pierre didn’t suffer, neither in the moment of his fall nor afterwards,” Cherpin’s family added in their own statement on Facebook.
Cherpin is the first participant to lose their life in the 2021 Dakar Rally after Paulo Goncalves and Edwin Straver died in the 2020 edition.
