DC United confirm Erik Sorga transfer to IFK Goteborg

DC United have confirmed the permanent departure of Erik Sorga to Sweden’s IFK Goteborg.

The Estonia international initially joined DC in February 2020 for a fee thought to be in the region of $500k, with high hopes about the forward’s potential for the future.

But it never quite worked out for Sorga, who scored just one goal – a 98th-minute winner against the New York Red Bulls – in 21 MLS appearances and spent the first half of 2021 on loan at VVV-Venlo in the Dutch second tier. Still just 22, Sorga will now look to fulfill his potential in Sweden.

“We want to thank Erik for his service to the club since joining in 2020,” D.C. United general manager Lucy Rushton said in a release. “We wish him the best of luck in Sweden in the next chapter of his professional career.”

Alongside Sorga, DC have parted ways with Joseph Mora (Charlotte FC) and Yordy Reyna (Charlotte FC), while the likes of Felipe Martins, Yamil Asad, and Frederic Brillant have all been released.

Defenders Brendan Hines-Ike and Gaoussou Samaké represent the club’s only incomings so far, but head coach Hernan Losada is sure to be targeting more quality additions in his bid to return his side to the MLS Cup Playoffs – they finished one place and one point off the 2021 playoffs.

The Black and Red begin their 2022 campaign at home to Charlotte FC on February 26.
