FC Barcelona – La Liga Never scored four goals in a season before
The 2020/21 season has proven to be a good one for Frenkie de Jong, who is showing his talent at Barcelona after taking a season to acclimatise at the Camp Nou.
The former Ajax midfielder has become one of the Catalans’ most decisive players, and he has stepped up after Ronald Koeman demanded more from him going forward. The coach doesn’t just expect him to win and distribute the ball, but also to score, and De Jong is doing exactly that.
De Jong scored his fourth goal for the season against Elche. His late goal set a new goalscoring record for him in a season, with his previous best having been three at Ajax in 2018/19.
In fact, the Dutchman already has more goals for Barcelona than he had in his entire Ajax career. His two goals last season take his LaLiga Santander tally at the club to five, whereas in the Eredivisie he only totalled four.
In all, he has six goals for Barcelona, with another coming in the Supercopa de Espana.
“Playing well is not just about scoring and assisting, but I’m happy,” De Jong said at the weekend.
“I think that we’ve been a little better since the beginning of the year. I don’t know if we’re in the title race. We have to win our games and see where we are at the end of the season
