Formula 1 Spoke in a documentary
Fernando Alonso is returning to Formula 1 and he can win another world championship, Pedro de la Rosa has claimed.
The Spaniard won with Renault in 2005 and 2006 and will race for the French team again in 2021, although this time it’ll be under the name of Alpine.
“He loves F1,” De la Rosa said of Alonso in a new Movistar documentary, titled ‘Vuelve Alonso, vuelve el jefe 2021’ – or ‘Alonso is back, the boss of 2021 is back’ in English.
“These last few years away from the sport have made him appreciate F1.
“His return is going to be very positive for F1 in general, not just for him.
“He can win the world championship again.
“[He has created] an excitement around the sport, it all used to be a bit sad before Alonso appeared.
“People used to be completely indifferent to it because there wasn’t a Spaniard who was winning.”
His friend Titi also spoke of his return to the sport.
“He’s got a lot to show,” explained Titi.
“The expectation is going to be like the first day. The boss is back”.
In the documentary, Alonso himself looks back at his roots in racing with his sister Lorena Alonso.
“It’s a passion that runs in the family, my father had a kart,” he said.
“He built me one, but Lorena didn’t get one”.
There are also the stories of his exploits in the Dakar Rally, the Le Mans 24-hour race and the Indianapolis 500.
“There are three sportsmen who are admired all over Spain and they are Rafael Nadal, Pau Gasol and Fernando Alonso,” said Jesus Presa, before echoing De la Rosa‘s claim that the 39-year-old can win again.
“He has his eyes on the 2022 championship and we are all hoping that he can be a champion again,” he added.
