Atletico Madrid Signed Costa, Morata and Suarez at tough moments
With Diego Costa having rescinded his Atletico Madrid contract, Moussa Dembele has become a transfer target for the LaLiga Santander leaders as they look to replace the Spain international.
In the past, Atleti have signed strikers who were going through a tough situation and they could now do the same with Dembele, who has had injury issues due to a broken arm and who has lost his importance in the team at Lyon.
He has played in 16 of their 18 matches so far, but has only started a third of his team’s games this campaign.
“He is one of our important players and we’d prefer for him to stay,” coach Rudi Garcia did say, even if the stats show otherwise.
The coach went on to state that if Dembele does leave then he’d want a replacement, leaving that door open.
Atleti have experience of signing players who are looking for a fresh start. They signed Costa in the summer of 2017, even though he wasn’t able to debut until January of 2018. The striker came anyway as he wanted out of Antonio Conte‘s Chelsea.
Alvaro Morata was also offered a route out of Chelsea when he joined in January of 2019.
Both of those signings had limited success, but the most recent example has gone well so far. With Luis Suarez told he was no longer in Barcelona‘s plans, the Uruguayan was looking for a new club in the previous transfer window. After flirting with Juventus, he signed for Los Colchoneros.
It has been a success so far, with his nine LaLiga Santander goals.
Now, Diego Simeone could offer another No.9 a fresh start and an opportunity to get back to top form. Given that Dembele scored 47 goals over the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons, it could be a happy marriage for both parties if it comes off.
