Eden Hazard to be given until summer to prove worth to Real Madrid

Eden Hazard will be given until the end of the season to prove his worth to Real Madrid, otherwise he could be sold.

Hazard has massively underwhelmed at the Santiago Bernabeu since he arrived at the club for an initial €100m fee, with many of his struggles over the past two years attributed to a catalogue of injury problems.

Overall, Hazard has made just 56 appearances for Real Madrid, registering just five goals and nine assists in that time, but he was handed a rare start by Carlo Ancelotti in Real’s 0-0 draw against La Liga strugglers Cadiz on Sunday – and was one of his side’s best performers.

Recent speculation has linked Hazard with a departure from Real, but Spanish publication AS note that the club are planning to give him the remainder of the season to further impress.

Should he fail to take his opportunity, it’s more than likely that Real will then look to cut ties with Hazard, particularly as there is already plenty of competition for places in wide areas.

Vinicius Junior, Marco Asensio and Rodrygo have all enjoyed good campaigns to date, while Gareth Bale remains an option despite his limited game time so far. Add the potential of arrival of Kylian Mbappe this summer into the mix and it’s clear to see why Real may opt to ship Hazard out of the club, if they can find a club able to afford him.

Nevertheless, if Ancelotti’s comments post-match against Cadiz are anything to go by, Hazard will get the opportunity to prove his worth and prolong his stay in the Spanish capital.

“I think it took him a while to get into the game,” Ancelotti told reporters. “He struggled more in the first half. I think he is more comfortable coming inside than staying right and he combined well with Karim Benzema when he came inside. He can be useful for us in the second half of the season.”
