Edouard Mendy wins The Best FIFA Goalkeeper Award for 2021

Chelsea and Senegal stopper Edouard Mendy has been named the winner of FIFA’s The Best Goalkeeper award for 2021.

Mendy enjoyed a successful debut season at Stamford Bridge following his arrival from Rennes in 2020, cementing his place as one of the world’s best goalkeepers and playing a huge role in their Champions League triumph – keeping a record nine clean sheets on the Blues’ way to victory in Porto.

He ousted stiff competition from Gianluigi Donnarumma – who helped Italy win Euro 2020 in the summer before a high-profile move to PSG – and Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer to win the award.

Despite winning this award, Mendy wasn’t voted into the FIFPro World XI for 2021, with Donnarumma taking the goalkeeper spot.

Nevertheless, Mendy joins an illustrious group of goalkeepers to have won FIFA’s The Best Goalkeeper award since it was first handed out in 2017 – Gianluigi Buffon, Thibaut Courtois, Alisson and Neuer are the past recipients.

Mendy arrived at Chelsea and immediately became their first-choice goalkeeper, usurping Kepa Arrizabalaga between the Stamford Bridge sticks.

He’s made 70 appearances and has played a key role in Chelsea’s progression to the top of Europe under Thomas Tuchel.
