Edwin van der Sar suggests he will return to Man Utd

Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar has predicted that he will return to Manchester United “one day”.

Before moving into the boardroom following his retirement in 2011, Van der Sar spent six successful years as United’s number one goalkeeper.

During his time at the club he helped the Red Devils win four Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.

These days he is CEO at boyhood club Ajax, where he has received glowing reviews. Ajax have certainly flourished under his stewardship, dominating domestically as well as coming within seconds of reaching the Champions League final in 2019.

Van der Sar was initially linked with a move to United earlier this year following the news that executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward would be stepping down from his role.

However, no agreement ever materialised with Woodward now looking likely to stay on as an advisor alongside director of football John Murtough, who was appointed in March.

Speaking to Dutch media outlet RTL (via Metro), Van der Sar insisted that while he is currently happy at Ajax, he would relish a role at Old Trafford in the future.

“‘I am enjoying myself so much at Ajax,” he responded, when asked whether a United switch would be tempting.

“I still have two years left here. I want to keep achieving things here with the club. But I am sure that one day the moment will arrive.”

There is set to be plenty of upheaval at United in the coming months. Ralf Rangnick was placed in interim charge of the first team until the end of the season following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last month, and after this he will be moving into a consultancy role for a further two years.

Whether there would be room for Van der Sar in a reshuffled boardroom remains to be seen.
