England predicted lineup vs Germany – Nations League

England will attempt to recover their Nations League campaign as they travel to face Germany in Munich on Tuesday night.

The Three Lions slipped to a rare and surprising defeat to Hungary on Saturday, courtesy of a second-half penalty from RB Leipzig’s Dominik Szoboszlai in Budapest.

Although the likes of Harry Kane and Declan Rice started there, it was still something of an experimental lineup as Jarrod Bowen and James Justin made their debuts.

England boss Gareth Southgate is likely to revert to his strongest available XI for the trip to Bavaria on Tuesday – a first meeting with Germany since a famous 2-0 victory at the last 16 stage of Euro 2020.

Here’s how Southgate could set up his side…

Jordan Pickford (GK) – Continued his impressive late-season form into the international break with some fine saves against Hungary. Given this is a competitive game he seems certain to start here.

Kyle Walker (CB) – Walker was taken off just after the hour mark on Saturday with this game in mind. His recovery pace is so useful at centre-back.

John Stones (CB) – Stones enjoyed a solid season at club level and should return to the starting lineup here having come off the bench on Saturday.

Harry Maguire (CB) – Has seemingly saved his best form for his country in recent months. Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi are still doubtful so Southgate may not want to risk them just yet.

Reece James (RWB) – The man who conceded the (very soft) match-winning penalty in Budapest will feel he has a point to prove. Trent Alexander-Arnold didn’t exactly nail down the position last time out.

Declan Rice (CM) – Pretty much a guaranteed starter in big games for England these days. Will likely be tasked with doing more of a defensive job than he has become accustomed to at club level.

Mason Mount (CM) – Another who was given half an hour’s rest before things went downhill at the weekend. Mount’s boundless energy could be crucial up against Germany’s midfield dynamos Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka.

Kieran Trippier (LWB) – Held in reserve on Saturday so could be in line for a start on Tuesday night, especially after a minor knock to James Justin. Bukayo Saka was the Leicester man’s replacement on the day but wasn’t outstanding.

Raheem Sterling (RW) – Left on the bench for the Hungary defeat due to illness but should be in line to return here having tormented Germany at Euro 2020 last year.

Harry Kane (ST) – In hindsight, Tammy Abraham should have been handed an opportunity in Budapest because it feels very unlikely that he’ll get one here.

Jack Grealish (LW) – Phil Foden has temporarily left the camp due to Covid-19, opening the door for his clubmate Grealish on the left. Saka is an option again here but Southgate might look to him for an impact off the bench.
