FC Cincinnati in talks to sign USMNT defender Matt Miazga from Chelsea

FC Cincinnati are in talks to sign United States international defender Matt Miazga from Chelsea, 90min understands.

Miazga left fellow Major League Soccer outfit the New York Red Bulls in January 2016 but has since made just two senior appearances for Chelsea. Instead, the center-back has experienced far more joy during various loan spells to the likes of Reading, Vitesse, and Anderlecht.

First reported by the Evening Standard, Miazga is now finally set for a permanent departure from Stamford Bridge. 90min understands FC Cincinnati are his most likely destination while, per the Evening Standard’s report, clubs from Belgium and the English Championship are on standby should a deal fall through. 90min sources say Coventry City are one of the EFL clubs holding a strong interest.

FC Cincinnati currently hold the top spot on the MLS Allocation Order, allowing them first priority among MLS clubs when it comes to signing ex-league players.

Should the Orange and Blue get the deal done, Miazga, still only 27 years old and capped 22 times for the USMNT, would join the likes of Nick Hagglund, Geoff Cameron, and Tyler Blackett on the center-back depth chart.

Pat Noonan’s side currently sit ninth in the Eastern Conference, still well in the fight to reach the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time.
