Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso has been run over in a cycling accident close to his home in Lugano, Switzerland.

Alonso was training on his bike, one of his great passions, in his pre-season routine, as he does every year.

The news was reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport and confirmed by MARCA, though there is not much information at present.

The Spaniard was taken to hospital where he has undergone x-rays with suspected fractures, though they haven’t yet been officially confirmed.

Alonso is generally in stable condition and the injuries are not serious, as confirmed by his team, Alpine F1.

“Fernando is conscious and well in himself and is awaiting further medical examinations tomorrow morning,” a statement said.

The blow could have taken place to his face, some rumours reported, though it is not expected to be serious enough to cause him to test March’s tests or the start of the season in Bahrein on March 28.

The driver was involved in another accident in 2009 when returning to Spain from a Christmas break in Kenya after his plane suffered damage after colliding with a building at the airport.

On February 22, 2015, Alonso had his most serious accident in a pre-season test with McLaren, as turn four saw him crash and be taken to hospital.

“The car had something, the steering blocked, I remember the accident and that’s what happened,” he said.
