FC Barcelona – La Liga Wants Messi to lead his project
Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font has made clear that the club do not have the financial strength to spend big and sign a player such as Erling Haaland.
Font explained that in the event he comes out victorious from the upcoming Blaugrana elections, his strategy will not be based on big signings, but his board will focus on sporting issues.
“Sign someone like Haaland?” Font told radio show ‘Aqui, amb Josep Cuni’.
“If we are irresponsible, [we could do it] yes. But if we want to do things as they should be done… Barcelona are a train going at 200 km/h towards a wall. [We can’t] stretch our arm further than our sleeve will reach.
“The point is to have a good sporting structure. You have to help compensate for a squad that is unbalanced.
“Signing Haaland or Mbappe is for [former Barcelona president] Josep Lluis Nunez and [Real Madrid president] Florentino [Perez]’s galacticos’ model. Our model is different.”
Font went on to highlight the importance of Lionel Messi leading the Barcelona project under Xavi Hernandez in the future.
“The sporting structure led by Xavi means that next year keeping Messi is key in sporting terms, and also in financial and institutional terms,” Font added.
“We have to keep him here. I know there is pressure [on Xavi Hernandez or Jordi Cruyff to not back a candidacy].”
