The majority of the Japanese population are against the idea of holding the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.

The 2020 Games were postponed by a year after the COVID-19 pandemic surged across the world in the first half of last year.

In a survey carried out by Kyodo in Japan, 80 percent of those that took part voted to either cancel or postpone the Games in 2021.

This number was made up of 35.3 percent of people who preferred the Games to be cancelled altogether, plus the 44.8 percent that voted for the Games to be pushed back again.

Japan is currently experiencing an increase in COVID-19 cases, which are again putting pressure on the country’s health system.

As things stand, the Olympics are due to start in Tokyo on July 23.
