Gian Piero Gasperini has insisted that Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez is no longer part of his plans at Atalanta because of tactical reasons.

The Argentine forward hasn’t played for Real Madrid‘s upcoming Champions League opponents since December 16.

Since then, Gasperini’s side have won four of their last five matches and scored 17 goals in the process. On Saturday, they beat Benevento 4-1 away from home.

“We had great times with him but his exclusion is a decision based on the fact that we needed to find a different type of team because, at the time, we were suffering,” Gasperini told Sky Sport Italia on Gomez’s absence.

“It’s only a tactical thing, as I wanted to help [Marten] de Roon and [Remo] Freuler more. It’s something that we’d always done but, at that point, it wasn’t accepted. [Gomez] didn’t adapt.”
