Juventus vs Napoli | Supercoppa Italiana The pair meet again in the Supercoppa
On Wednesday night former AC Milan teammates Gennaro Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo will meet once again, this time as opposing coaches as Napoli take on Juventus in the Supercoppa Italiana.
The midfielders played together with Italy from the under-15s onwards, going on to play 343 games together while lifting 11 trophies.
Comrades on and off the pitch, the duo developed a close but peculiar friendship, as Gattuso recalls.
“I’ve given him more slaps than Bud Spencer to Terrence Hill,” said Gattuso.
The Napoli coach also admitted he was blown away by Pirlo‘s ability on the pitch, but that that is no guarantee of success as a coach.
“When I saw Andrea play, I thought I had better change profession,” said Gattuso.
“A great career as a player isn’t enough to be a coach. You have to study, work hard… and you don’t sleep much.”
Once teammates, now rivals, always friends, Gattuso and Pirlo face off as coach for the first time on Wednesday night as the Supercoppa Italiana returns to Italian soil after having been played abroad in the last few seasons.
