Harry Kane’s England teammates are said to believe that he could refuse to return to training following his post-Euro 2020 holiday in an attempt to force a high profile transfer to Manchester City before the end of summer.
Frustrated by a lack of trophies or competitiveness at the elite level, Kane informed Spurs officials in the final week of last season that he wants to leave the club.
But Spurs have been adamant that they won’t sell and at the very least would prefer to see him go abroad than strengthen another Premier League team. Kane still has another three years left on the contract he signed in 2018, giving Spurs the power unless he takes matters into his own hands.
90min revealed in June that Kane is open to joining Paris Saint-Germain, which would mean a reunion with former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, and they are genuine contenders. But his preference is still to stay in England, with Manchester City determined to land a new striker, regardless of manager Pep Guardiola’s public reticence over prices.
Joining City, who have won three Premier League titles in the last four seasons and reached the 2021 Champions League final, would virtually guarantee Kane the trophies he craves.
Kane refused to discuss his future publicly while Euro 2020 was ongoing, but the Daily Telegraph writes that England players who spent the last six weeks with him think there is a ‘possibility’ he will not report for training after his holiday if Spurs continue to refuse to entertain a sale.
It would certainly be a bold move from Kane should it happen as it would effectively be the equivalent of going on strike and risk souring his relationship with fans.
New manager Nuno Espirito Santo toed the line in his first public appearance as Spurs boss, insisting on Friday, “Harry is our player. Period. No need to talk about anything else, I am looking forward to him joining the group.”
But Nuno and Spurs could be fighting a losing battle if Kane remains determined to leave.
