Inter are closing in on the signing of Edin Dzeko from Roma, as they look to replace Chelsea-bound Romelu Lukaku.
Dzeko has netted regularly since moving to Serie A in 2015. Overall, he has managed 119 goals in 260 appearances in all competitions but only scored 13 in 38 games last time out. Despite the 35-year-old’s recent patchy form, he should complete a move to Inter in the coming days.
News of Dzeko agreeing personal terms with the Nerazzurri was first reported by Gianluca Di Marzio on Sunday. It brings to an end a long period of speculation over his future, which affected his performances on the pitch last season.
Dzeko has big shoes to fill this campaign with Inter expected to lose the talismanic Lukaku to Chelsea imminently. As reported by 90min last week, the two clubs agreed a €115m (£97.4m) fee and the Belgian is set to become the Blues’ highest paid player. Lukaku sat out of his side’s friendly against Parma on Saturday at Chelsea’s request so they could finalise the deal.
Such is Lukaku’s importance to Inter, the club are thought to be eyeing up not one but two replacements. As well as signing Dzeko, the Nerazzurri are keen to complete a move for Atalanta’s Duvan Zapata. Zapata registered 15 goals and ten assists in Serie A last season.
Roma also need a new striker. New manager Jose Mourinho is said to favour a powerful forward capable of leading the line on his own. They have explored the possibilities of signing Andrea Belotti and Mauro Icardi, but neither deal seems feasible.
An alternative option is Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham. The Blues are keen to get the youth academy graduate off the books to fund their signing of Lukaku and a host of European clubs are interested. As well as Roma, Aston Villa, Southampton, Tottenham and Atletico Madrid have all been linked in the past.
