Inter Milan 0-2 Bayern Munich: Three Things We Learned

Heading into this week of Champions League action, which kickstarts the road to Istanbul, one of the most highly anticipated clashes was between the two clubs who contested the 2010 final – Inter Milan and Bayern Munich. These two teams help make up the incredible group of death in Group C and while both were hoping to get off to a great start, it was the German giants who managed to get the job done with a comfortable, comprehensive triumph that allowed them to really make a statement on the opening week.

Today, we’re going to take a look at a few things we took away from an intriguing night in Italy.

Bayern’s dominance

Att1...

With 21 shot and a real dictation of the pace in the middle of the park, Bayern Munich came across as the champions we all know them to be. They’ve mastered the art of the Bundesliga and as a result of that, they’re able to put a bit more of their focus into Europe. We’re seeing it come to the forefront in a big way, to the point where we don’t think many other teams will be able to live with how well-rounded they are.

Weak at home?

Inter Milan are an elite club and that can’t be understated but at the San Siro, they were completely neutralised and it wasn’t really even particularly close. At some points they seemed to be quite happy with sitting back and allowing the game to play out and at others, they came across as frustrated with no real direction. They can still get out of this group, but this was a humbling defeat in every part of the pitch.

Tough group ahead

Next week, Inter Milan will take on Viktoria Plzen away from home – a wildcard team who want to bounce back from being humbled 5-1 at the hands of Barcelona. On the flip side, the boys from the Nou Camp will travel to Bayern, where Robert Lewandowski will make his first appearance since leaving the club. Based on what we saw last night, we’d say that we could be in for a few more surprise results.
