After returning to Manchester in the summer, he has since been recalled by Gareth Southgate into the England setup ahead of the 2022 World Cup.
Upon his return to Old Trafford, Lingard was once again used scarcely by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But after the Norwegian’s exit in November, there is belief from within the midfielder’s camp that he could yet have a future at the club, although he has not started under interim boss Ralf Rangnick.
His current contract expires at the end of the season and as he can leave for nothing in the summer, while he can freely talk with foreign clubs in January.
West Ham have long been linked with a return move for Lingard, while Newcastle have made it known they would be keen to take him to St James’ Park as part of Eddie Howe’s rebuild.
However, sources close to the player have confirmed to 90min that he currently has no plans of moving in January, and that he may not even move to another Premier League club if and when he leaves United.
We are told that Lingard’s main ambition at this moment is to win a new contract at his beloved United – but he will only sign if he feels he is part of the first team and can contribute.
If not, then Lingard is believed to be very keen on playing abroad. We revealed in the summer how Atletico Madrid were interested in a deal, and they’re among a number of clubs looking at Lingard – and they will be free to offer him a pre-contract from January.
