Joshua Kimmich back in training following coronavirus complications

Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich has returned to training after testing negative for Covid-19.

Kimmich was ruled out of Die Roten’s final few games of 2021 after contracting coronavirus, and when he attempted to come back to the practice field he suffered breathing difficulties.

However, as reported by Bild, the 26-year-old has now successfully returned to training after recording a negative PCR test. All in all Kimmich has been away from his teammates for 47 days.

His original positive test was recorded on 25 November, with his most recent Bayern game being a 2-1 victory over Freiburg on 6 November.

Kimmich’s return is a significant boost for Julian Nagelsmann’s side as they enter into a crucial portion of the campaign. Bayern currently top the Bundesliga table by seven points, with Borussia Dortmund their closest challengers.

Next up for Kimmich’s side is a meeting with Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday evening. After previously impressing in recent seasons, Die Fohlen are struggling badly this time out and are currently hovering just above the relegation zone.

Bayern are also still competing in the Champions League and will take on Red Bull Salzburg in the last-16 next month.

Prior to his enforced absence Kimmich had been an indispensable part of the first team. Overall, he has made just shy of 300 appearances in all competitions since arriving at the Allianz Arena during the 2015/16 campaign.

Kimmich’s coronavirus infection caused controversy as the player later admitted that he had not been vaccinated. Previously he and teammate Leon Goretzka had fronted a public campaign, We Kick Corona, that provided relief to businesses that have been affected by the pandemic.
